The tax year at a glance

    Services

    Find yourself on this list.

Most people come with one problem and discover there are three. Whatever you start with, the whole picture gets looked at — and you'll get a fixed monthly price before any work begins.

    You work for yourself

Sole trader accounts & Self Assessment

Your figures pulled together, expenses claimed properly, and your tax return filed well before January. You'll know what you owe with months to save for it, not days.

    SA100 · SA103

    You run a limited company

    Statutory accounts & Corporation Tax

Year-end accounts to Companies House, the CT600 to HMRC, confirmation statements, and honest advice on how to pay yourself between salary and dividends.

    CT600 · Companies House

    You work in construction

    CIS returns & refunds

Monthly contractor returns filed on time, subcontractors verified, and deductions reclaimed. If you're a subcontractor who's been overtaxed all year, that's usually a refund.

    CIS300 · Monthly

    You employ people

    Payroll & auto-enrolment

Payslips, RTI submissions every pay run, starters and leavers, statutory pay, and pension assessments handled. Weekly, fortnightly or monthly — whatever your team is used to.

    PAYE · RTI

    You're VAT registered (or nearly)

    VAT returns & scheme advice

Quarterly returns prepared and submitted, plus a straight answer on whether standard, flat rate or cash accounting actually suits how you trade.

    Quarterly

    HMRC is changing the rules

    Making Tax Digital, sorted early

Digital records and quarterly updates are coming in for sole traders and landlords by income band. Get moved onto compliant software now, at your own pace, rather than in a rush at the deadline.

MTD for IT · MTD for VAT

The paperwork has got away from you

    Bookkeeping & catch-up work

Receipts in a carrier bag, three years behind, a letter from HMRC you've not opened. It's more common than you think, and it's fixable. No lectures.

    Catch-up

    Software

Set up once, properly, so it stays quiet.

Good software only saves you time if it's configured for how your business actually works. Whichever you're on, it gets set up, connected to your bank, and kept tidy.

    FreeAgent

Best for sole traders & contractors

Straightforward invoicing, expense capture from your phone, and a running estimate of the tax you'll owe. Often free with certain business bank accounts — worth checking before you pay for anything.

    Xero

    Best for growing limited companies

Strong bank feeds, easy multi-user access and a wide range of add-ons for stock, job costing or CIS. The one to pick if you expect to take on staff or need your accountant in the file daily.

    Sage

Best for established books & payroll

Long-standing and dependable, particularly for payroll and businesses with years of history already in it. No need to migrate away from something that works.

Not on anything yet? — you'll get a recommendation based on your turnover, VAT position and how much you want to do yourself.
Already on something else? — QuickBooks, spreadsheets and paper records are all workable too.

    About

    A small practice, on purpose.

Michaela Humphrey Accountancy is a small independent practice working with owner-managed businesses in Worthing and across West Sussex. You deal with the same person every time — no call centre, no being passed down to whoever is free.

Ten years in accountancy practice sits behind that — long enough to have met most situations before, including the ones people feel awkward ringing about. As an AAT Licensed Accountant I'm qualified and regulated to cover everything on this page: bookkeeping, payroll, VAT, CIS, year-end accounts and your tax return, all in one place.

Fees are agreed in advance as a fixed monthly amount, so you can ring with a question without watching the clock.

    1. A free first conversation

Twenty minutes on the phone or over a coffee. Tell me what you do and where things currently stand, however messy.

A fixed monthly fee listing exactly what's included. If a catch-up job is needed first, that's priced separately and clearly.

    3. Handover and go

Authorisation with HMRC, records collected from your previous accountant, software set up, and the first deadline taken off your hands.
